What Size Grill Tank Do I Need?
Choosing the right propane grill tank
Choosing a grill tank may seem straightforward, but there are actually a lot of factors that go into selecting the right size and orientation of a grill tank to meet your needs. It largely comes down to how many people you’re grilling for and whether it is for personal or commercial use. Read on to learn more about the different grill tank sizes and orientations.
Common propane tank sizes
Propane grill tanks can vary depending on whether you’re operating a backyard barbeque grill, or a food trunk expecting hundreds of visitors. Most propane grill tanks are cylinder shaped, so these terms are often used interchangeably.
- The 20 lb. propane tank is the most commonly recognized grill tank size and is popular for use in powering family-style propane grills, backyard BBQs, small recreational vehicles, and travel trailers. It can also be a good option for patio heaters, and other outdoor equipment. These sized propane cylinders are portable and provide a good balance between being lightweight enough to move easily, but having a large enough capacity to store the amount of propane you’ll need as a backyard grill enthusiast.
- A 30 lb. propane cylinder is a good choice for backyard grillers who grill quite often, for a larger number of people. If you are an avid griller who hosts events for friends and family on the regular, this size tank could be a happy medium.
- A 40 lb. cylinder tank is about the minimum size that a commercial grill would require. If you have a small commercial operation, you might be able to get away with this size tank, but it’s best used for a fixed purpose, since it will be too heavy to move around a lot.
- A 100 lb. cylinder is more appropriate for food trucks and mobile kitchen operations that have a sizeable customer base. This size cylinder comes in both horizontal and vertical models. If you use your grill tank to power an additional small propane appliance such as a fireplace, this size tank may suffice.
